The food is delicious. Everything is homemade by the friendly cook and is healthy and plentiful. There is a banquet breakfast of fresh fruit, granola, toast and cooked breakfast; a delicious array of salads, pasta and potatoes at lunch and wonderful dinners. Desserts were exquisite and included chocolate mousse, raspberry panacotta, fruit salad and mango purée.

Watamu is on the edge of a National Marine Park, so we spent several days snorkelling on the coral reef and going on boat trips to deserted beaches. AI Hamra is also an ideal place for unwinding before or after going on safari. Our safari was made to measure by Al Hamra’s travel agents in Kenya; they offered a bespoke service which was very reasonable in terms of price and we benefitted from an established relationship and local links. We were collected by our driver from Al Hamra and driven to Tsavo East (only a few hours away) where we stayed in a lodge for two nights before being taken straight from Tsavo to Nairobi.

Al Hamra is indulgent and idyllic, it is one of those rare places that it is easy to be effusive about and that it is difficult to leave.

The bedrooms are luxurious without being ostentatious, and the décor feels as if it’s been plucked from the palaces of those traders which profited most from the Arabian spice routes hundreds of years ago.

The staff are friendly, attentive and the most smiley and welcoming people I’ve ever met.
